Polonnaruwa, also known as the second kingdom of Sri Lanka was first declared the capital of ancient Ceylon by King Vijayabahu the First, who rescued the kingdom from the Chola Invaders in 1070. Even though King Vijayabahu the First initiated the kingdom of Polonnaruwa; the “Hero of Polonnaruwa” was Parakramabahu the First, who’s under the strategic plan created the Golden Age of Polonnaruwa where agriculture and trade flourishes under the patronage of the King.

Gal Vihara Temple Complex is one of the most iconic temples in Polonnaruwa Kingdom where three postures of Lord Buddha is carved out of one massive rock phase depicting reclining, seating and standing postures. It is best for photography and many devotees flock the temple during Vesak and Poya days for prayers.
